Did I mention that the boy and I are making his costume? He wants to be a LEGO™ minifig. Currently, he wants to be this one. The big challenge is going to be the head. Will he be willing to wear this on his head for the tricks or treats?

Hello. I'm the creator of that first Lego costume you linked to. I'm not sure if any of these are a good idea for a "trick or treating" costume, as it's very hard to see through the mask. For a child's trick or treating costume, I imagine safety is your #1 priority.
A variation on the one from Scoop Vendor might be the safest: make the cylinder as small a diameter as possible and the eye holes as large as possible, thereby increasing the field of view. Also, instead of using black fabric, I'd probably just go with black face paint around the eyes. This would give a similar effect, while leaving the child's view thought the holes unobstructed. You probably also want to aim for having the top-edge of the eye holes line up with the wearer's eyes so that they can more easily see the ground. It's surprisingly hard to walk when you can't see the ground in front of you.
Even safer, of course, would be to just go with face paint, though I'm not sure if just painting someone's face yellow would make them look more like a Lego minifig or a Simpsons character.
